How To Get Married Legally in Ireland

Wondering how to get married legally in Ireland? It can be a little overwhelming considering all the documents you’ll need and the different processes.

Legal marriages in Ireland

To legally get married in Ireland you must give at least three months notice. This notice must be given in person and it must take place at a civil registration office.

  • How do I book my marriage notification appointment?

Book a notification appointment here. You can also book your appointment over the phone (just contact a civil registration service) or in certain parts of the country, you can book online.

  • What happens during the appointment?

During your marriage notification appointment, you meet with the registrar to discuss some details and sign a declaration form. You will need to sign the declaration form to state that you don’t know of any legal reason why your marriage can’t happen. Once this checks out the registrar will give you a marriage registration form.

  • What should I bring to the appointment?

You will both need to bring an original copy and a colour photocopy of the following;

- Passport

- Refugee card or asylum card

- National Identity card

You will also need;

- Original and photocopy of your birth certificates

- Proof of address (original and photocopy dated within the last three months)

- Personal Public Service numbers

Who can marry you?

In order for the marriage to be legal the ceremony must be performed by a registered solemniser. For civil ceremonies the register will solemniser the marriage.

Do I need a witness?

You will need at least two witnesses who are over the age of 18 on the day of the marriage ceremony.

Ceremony Details

You will need to provide ceremony details such as;

- The type of service

- Name and address of proposed venue

- Name of solemniser

- Name date of birth of witnesses
